Abdominoplasty
Overview of
Abdominoplasty
Dr Stéphane Raoult performs abdominoplasty procedures at the Clinique du Golfe in Gassin, in the heart of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.
Abdominoplasty is a procedure designed to correct significant damage to the abdominal wall when liposuction alone is no longer sufficient. It allows the removal of damaged skin (stretched, marked by stretch marks, or scarred), tightening of the remaining healthy skin, and, if necessary, treatment of associated excess fat or loosened abdominal muscles.
The procedure most often involves removing a large ellipse of skin located between the navel and the pubic area, then redraping the upper skin downward. The navel is repositioned and a scar, more or less extensive depending on the amount of skin removed, is placed at the pubic level and in the groin folds.
Abdominoplasty achieves a firmer and smoother abdominal wall, with often significant aesthetic and functional benefits when the indication is well established.
The Care Pathway for
Abdominoplasty
Before the Procedure
A preoperative assessment is performed according to the surgeon's prescriptions.
A consultation with the anesthesiologist takes place no later than 48 hours before the procedure.
Certain recommendations must be followed:
- No anticoagulants or products affecting blood clotting should be used, unless otherwise advised by the anesthesiologist.
- Smoking cessation is required 3 to 4 weeks before the procedure, due to its impact on healing.
- The anesthesiologist will provide specific instructions for this procedure.
The Surgical Procedure
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.
The incisions are planned based on the amount and location of damaged skin to be removed: the more extensive the skin damage, the longer the scar will be.
- Fat can be suctioned at the same time, and stretched abdominal muscles can be tightened.
- The healthy skin is then redraped downward, and the navel is preserved and repositioned.
- A shaping dressing and a compression garment are applied at the end of the procedure.
The duration of the operation ranges from 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.
After the Procedure
Dressings must be changed for approximately 15 days.
Wearing a compression garment is required for 4 to 6 weeks, day and night.
You should plan for 2 to 4 weeks off work.
Scar evolution:
- The scar is pink for the first 2 to 3 months, then gradually fades over 1 to 3 years.
- No direct sun or UV exposure should occur before 3 months.
Resuming sports is possible progressively from the 8th week.
The result is fully appreciable approximately one year after the procedure, allowing time for the scar to refine and the skin to regain its suppleness.
