Overview of
Abdominoplasty

Dr Stéphane Raoult performs abdominoplasty procedures at the Clinique du Golfe in Gassin, in the heart of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

Abdominoplasty is a procedure designed to correct significant damage to the abdominal wall when liposuction alone is no longer sufficient. It allows the removal of damaged skin (stretched, marked by stretch marks, or scarred), tightening of the remaining healthy skin, and, if necessary, treatment of associated excess fat or loosened abdominal muscles.

The procedure most often involves removing a large ellipse of skin located between the navel and the pubic area, then redraping the upper skin downward. The navel is repositioned and a scar, more or less extensive depending on the amount of skin removed, is placed at the pubic level and in the groin folds.

Abdominoplasty achieves a firmer and smoother abdominal wall, with often significant aesthetic and functional benefits when the indication is well established.

The Care Pathway for
Abdominoplasty

Before the Procedure

A preoperative assessment is performed according to the surgeon's prescriptions.

A consultation with the anesthesiologist takes place no later than 48 hours before the procedure.

Certain recommendations must be followed:

Recommendations:
  • No anticoagulants or products affecting blood clotting should be used, unless otherwise advised by the anesthesiologist.
  • Smoking cessation is required 3 to 4 weeks before the procedure, due to its impact on healing.
  • The anesthesiologist will provide specific instructions for this procedure.

The Surgical Procedure

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.

The incisions are planned based on the amount and location of damaged skin to be removed: the more extensive the skin damage, the longer the scar will be.

  • Fat can be suctioned at the same time, and stretched abdominal muscles can be tightened.
  • The healthy skin is then redraped downward, and the navel is preserved and repositioned.
  • A shaping dressing and a compression garment are applied at the end of the procedure.

The duration of the operation ranges from 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.

After the Procedure

Dressings must be changed for approximately 15 days.

Wearing a compression garment is required for 4 to 6 weeks, day and night.

You should plan for 2 to 4 weeks off work.

Scar evolution:

  • The scar is pink for the first 2 to 3 months, then gradually fades over 1 to 3 years.
  • No direct sun or UV exposure should occur before 3 months.

Resuming sports is possible progressively from the 8th week.

The result is fully appreciable approximately one year after the procedure, allowing time for the scar to refine and the skin to regain its suppleness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Abdominoplasty is indicated when the skin of the abdomen is too damaged or stretched to be corrected by liposuction alone. It allows the removal of the most damaged skin (stretched, marked by stretch marks, scarred, or postpartum) and tightening of the healthy skin, sometimes combined with the treatment of excess fat or stretched abdominal muscles.
Abdominal liposuction is sufficient when the skin remains of good quality and can retract. Abdominoplasty becomes necessary when the skin is too damaged: significant stretching, numerous stretch marks, or scars. In these situations, skin removal is essential.
The scar depends on the amount of skin removed: the more damaged the skin, the longer it will be. It is generally located at the upper edge of the pubic hair and may extend more or less into the groin folds. The length is predictable before the operation and clearly explained to the patient.
Yes. When necessary, liposuction can be performed at the same time to treat localized excess fat and improve the overall result.
Yes. In cases of diastasis or muscle weakness, the abdominal muscles can be tightened during the abdominoplasty, thereby improving the firmness of the abdominal wall.
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, allowing the patient to be fully asleep during the procedure.
The hospital stay generally lasts 1 to 5 days at the Clinique du Golfe (Gassin).

You should plan for 2 to 4 weeks off work depending on the case. Resuming sports activities is done progressively from the 8th week postoperatively.
The result of an abdominoplasty is assessed after approximately one year, the time needed for the scar to fade and the tissues to fully soften. The improvement is often both aesthetic and functional.
