Overview of
Breast Implants

Dr Stéphane Raoult performs breast augmentation procedures at the Clinique du Golfe de Saint-Tropez in Gassin, in the heart of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

Breast augmentation with implants corrects underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have lost volume following pregnancy or weight loss. This procedure is intended for patients who experience this hypotrophy as affecting their femininity and wish to restore a shape in harmony with their figure.

The implants commonly used today are made of silicone gel and offer a wide variety of shapes and volumes for a personalized result. They are selected based on the patient's body type, tissue quality, and expectations, in order to achieve a natural, balanced, and long-lasting bust.

The Care Pathway for
Breast Implants

Before the Procedure

A preoperative assessment is carried out according to the surgeon's prescriptions.

A consultation with the anesthesiologist takes place no later than 48 hours before the procedure.

Recommendations:
  • No anticoagulants or products affecting blood clotting should be used, unless otherwise advised by the anesthesiologist.
  • Smoking cessation is required 3 to 4 weeks before the procedure, due to its impact on wound healing.
  • The anesthesiologist will provide specific instructions for this procedure.

The Procedure

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia.

  • After making the chosen incision (periareolar, axillary, or inframammary), the surgeon creates an appropriate pocket for the implant.
  • The implant is placed either in front of or behind the pectoral muscle, depending on the strategy defined during the consultation.
  • If ptosis is also present, a skin correction may be performed during the same procedure.
  • A shaping dressing and a bra are applied at the end of the procedure.

The operation lasts between 1 to 2.5 hours.

After the Procedure

Postoperative recovery may involve a sensation of tightness, swelling, bruising, and difficulty raising the arms.

  • Pain medication is prescribed for the first few days.
  • The first dressing is removed after a few days and replaced with a lighter one.
  • Wearing a supportive bra is recommended day and night for several weeks.
  • Time off work of 5 to 10 days is generally necessary.
  • Physical activity can be resumed 1 to 2 months after the procedure.

The final result appears within 2 to 6 months, once the breasts have regained their suppleness and the implants have settled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast implants are used to correct hypoplasia, meaning insufficient breast volume or volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss. They restore a more harmonious shape, often sought to improve femininity and psychological well-being.
Yes. When the lack of volume is associated with ptosis, it may be necessary to remove excess skin to lift the breast. This correction, called mastopexy, may result in additional scars around the areola and sometimes vertically.
Implants always have a silicone elastomer shell. The filling material may vary. The implants are pre-filled with cohesive silicone gel, valued for its consistency similar to a natural breast.
Yes. New-generation silicone gel implants meet strict standards, including CE marking and regulatory approval. Their shell is more robust to prevent gel diffusion and improve reliability. The cohesive gel limits dispersion in case of rupture.
The choice depends on the patient's body type, tissue quality, and aesthetic expectations. There are round implants and anatomical teardrop-shaped implants, with varying heights, widths, and projections, allowing a highly personalized selection.
A thorough medical history and complete clinical examination determine the surgical strategy. Blood tests are performed, and breast imaging (ultrasound or mammogram) may be requested. A consultation with the anesthesiologist is systematic within 48 hours before the operation.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
The procedure usually requires a one-day hospital stay, with discharge the following day. In some cases, it can be performed as an outpatient procedure at the Clinique du Golfe de Saint-Tropez (Gassin) with same-day return home.
The first few days may involve pain, especially if the implant is placed behind the muscle. Swelling, bruising, and difficulty raising the arms are common. The first dressing is removed after a few days, and a supportive bra is recommended for several weeks.

The definitive result is visible within 3 to 6 months, once the breasts have regained their suppleness and the implants have settled. The volume gain improves the figure and can have a very positive psychological impact.
No. Breast implants require more frequent monitoring beyond 10 years, as from that point they may present a higher risk of rupture.
