Liposuction
Overview of
Liposuction
Dr Stéphane Raoult performs liposuction procedures at the Clinique du Golfe in Gassin, in the heart of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.
Liposuction is a procedure designed to remove localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is not intended for weight loss or the treatment of obesity, but rather to reshape the silhouette by eliminating excess fat cells through fine cannulas inserted via very small incisions.
It can be performed on many areas of the body: saddlebags, hips, abdomen, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, arms, as well as the face and neck (double chin, jawline).
Current techniques allow for more precise fat removal and improved skin retraction.
The Care Pathway for
Liposuction
Before the Procedure
A preoperative assessment is performed according to the surgeon's prescriptions.
A consultation with the anesthesiologist takes place no later than 48 hours before the procedure.
Certain recommendations must be followed:
- No anticoagulants or products affecting blood clotting should be used, unless otherwise advised by the anesthesiologist.
- Smoking cessation is required 3 to 4 weeks before the procedure, due to its impact on healing.
- The anesthesiologist will provide specific instructions for this procedure.
The Surgical Procedure
The technique may vary from one surgeon to another, but always relies on the same principles:
- Short incisions (3 to 4 mm) are made, usually hidden in a natural skin fold.
- Fat is removed using blunt-tipped cannulas, creating a regular network of tunnels while preserving blood vessels and nerves.
- The amount of fat extracted is adapted to the skin quality, a key factor in achieving a good result.
- At the end of the procedure, a shaping dressing is applied, always combined with a compression garment or panty.
The total duration depends on the areas and volume to be treated: from 30 minutes to 3 hours, averaging 1 to 2 hours.
After the Procedure
Recovery depends on the amount of fat removed.
- Bruising and swelling (edema) appear in the treated areas.
- Pain is moderate thanks to the use of fine cannulas.
- Fatigue may be felt in the first days in cases of extensive liposuction.
Resuming activities:
- Normal activity: between 3 and 6 days depending on the extent of the procedure.
- Sports: after 3 weeks.
- Compression garment: to be worn for 3 to 6 weeks.
Progress:
- The first 15–20 days are still marked by bruising and swelling.
- The result begins to appear from 3 weeks onward, after the edema subsides.
- The skin gradually retracts over 3 to 6 months to reveal the final silhouette.
