Otoplasty in Saint-Tropez - Protruding ear correction by Dr Stéphane Raoult

Overview of
Otoplasty

Dr Stéphane Raoult performs otoplasty procedures at the Clinique du Golfe in Gassin, in the heart of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

Otoplasty is a procedure that corrects protruding ears by reshaping the cartilage responsible for their excessive projection.

It addresses excessive angulation, concha hypertrophy, or antihelix folding deficiency to restore naturally folded ears that are symmetrical and better positioned against the skull.

Performed from the age of 7 or in adulthood, this surgery puts an end to aesthetic insecurities and the teasing often experienced during childhood.

The Care Pathway for
Otoplasty

Before the Procedure

A preoperative assessment is carried out according to the surgeon's prescriptions.

A consultation with the anesthesiologist takes place no later than 48 hours before the procedure.

Recommendations:
  • No anticoagulants or products that interfere with blood clotting should be used, unless otherwise advised by the anesthesiologist.
  • Smoking cessation is required 3 to 4 weeks before the procedure, due to its impact on healing.
  • The anesthesiologist will provide specific instructions for this procedure.

The Procedure

The incisions are generally concealed behind the ear, in the retroauricular sulcus. The surgeon lifts the skin to access the cartilage and then reshapes it: thinning, folding, deep sutures, or, if necessary, small cartilage resections.

The auricle is repositioned and held in place with sutures. A compressive dressing is applied.

The procedure lasts on average 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the corrections needed.

After the Procedure

Pain is moderate and managed with analgesics if needed. The ear may be swollen, puffy, or temporarily bruised.

  • The initial dressing is replaced with a lighter bandage.
  • A support headband must be worn day and night for approximately 15 days, then at night only for a few additional weeks.
  • Activities with risk of impact should be avoided.
  • Cold exposure is not recommended for 3 months.

It corrects the cartilage anomalies responsible for ear protrusion: excessive angulation, concha hypertrophy, antihelix folding deficiency, or modification of the ear lobule appearance.
They are generally hidden behind the ear, in the retroauricular sulcus. More rarely, very small incisions may be placed at the front, concealed in the natural folds.
Pain is generally moderate and well controlled with an appropriate analgesic protocol.
A support headband must be worn day and night for approximately 15 days, then at night only for a few additional weeks.
Physical activities with risk of impact or contact should be avoided throughout the initial healing period and for a minimum of 2 to 3 months. The surgeon will specify the timelines based on each case.
Swelling and bruising may appear in the first few days, which is temporary. They do not affect the final result. The ear shape improves over 3 to 4 weeks.
In the vast majority of cases, yes. A slight partial recurrence is possible in the medium term, but it remains rare.
Allow 1 to 2 months for the swelling to subside and the final ear contours to become visible. Scars gradually fade over time. Procedures are performed at the Clinique du Golfe in Gassin, near Saint-Tropez.
